Indian Cricket Player Arrested in Harare Zimbabwe for Rape

A member of the Indian Cricket Team appeared before a Harare Court facing rape accusations from a local Zimbabwean woman, Wabatwa Musvo has been told.

Our source who refused to be named told reporters that an Indian Cricketer allegedly raped a Harare woman at the team hotel on Friday night and was arrested Saturday morning after the complainant made a report to Harare Central Police.

According to the source, the Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe was seen at the local Meikles Hotel trying to persuade authorities to do an out of court settlement which was rejected by the complainant and Zimbabwe prosecutors.

Asked to comment on the matter, Zimbabwe Police Commissioner Mrs Charit Charamba simply confirmed that a person from the Indian team was arrested for a sex related offense.

“An Indian national has been arrested and I can not confirm whether it’s a player or team official as I am bound by law. What I can say is that the accused individual appeared in court on Saturday,” said Charamba.

Zimbabwe has very tough ‘no nonsense’ rape laws.
A person can get about 9 years per rape count and it is common for a person to be sentenced for up to 60 years for rape.

Those found guilty are send to the notorious Chikurubi Maximum prison located near Harare.

We will update this news item with latest news as soon as we get any new development on the story.
