Following declarations made by CAF'S President Dr. Ahmad Ahmad on stripping Ghana off its hosting rights of the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations(AFWCON), the country's Sporting officials say they are not aware of any such decision.
Elvis Adjei Baah, Communications Director of the Ghana's Ministry of Youths and Sports said during an interview with a local radio station that:
"We haven’t received any official letter from CAF saying we have been stripped off of the 2019 AWCON. If there has been a change in the hosting plan, I believe we should be the first to be notified. The Liaison team is also saying they haven’t received any official letter from CAF either. We can’t deal with rumours. I only know Ghana has the right to host of the AWCON.
Until CAF writes to us, Ghana is still the host of the competition. I believe Ghana is ready to host this tournament. I will be surprised if CAF take the hosting right from us.
We are trying to contact CAF to find out if such news is true or not. The Liaison team are working on it.
The CAF inspection team visited Ghana in July, and discovered that the venues for the competition: Accra and Cape Coast will not be ready by the start of the tournament come November 17, 2018.
For that reason, the Local Organizing Committee decided to move the tournament in Kumasi and Tamale, which was rejected by CAF.
Speaking yesterday Sunday at the CAF extraordinary General Assembly that kicked off on Saturday, CAF'S President Dr. Ahmad Ahmad said they were talking to some countries to take over the hosting of the competition.
"We are engaging several countries and should be able to announce a host during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Egypt next month," CAF Ahmad said on Sunday.
According to him,the competition is just three months away, and the "work progress is unimpressive".
Why did CAF not send an official withdrawal correspondence to Ghana? That is the question on every lip.
