Chitungwiza Municipality is set to introduce point of sales (P.O.S) machines in the coming weeks to make rate payments easier for residents.
The move comes at a time when the municipality’s monthly revenue is decreasing amid claims that residents cannot access cash to pay rates.
During a full council meeting, Councillor Shuddy Mapuranga said residents are reluctant to pay for rates due to difficulties in withdrawing money from banks.
‘‘When is this municipality introducing point of sale machines? We are in a budget crisis because the residents are at times too time constrained to pay rates.
“Our counterparts in Harare have already launched the services so I believe it is time for us to do the same,’’ he said.

Acting Town Clerk Maxwell Karenyi assured the councillors that the P.O.S machines would be up and running in the coming few weeks.
‘‘We are have applied for the machines at several banks, we have put the framework together. The Finance department assures me that the machines will be at the municipality within the next few weeks. We understand the economic constraints the residents are going through,” he said.
